"He who seeks beauty shall find it"- Bill Cunningham

The wife and I went to see Bill Cunningham New York last night at the Film Forum.  I had no idea who he was, had never been to an indie theater before and actually never even been to see documentary in theaters before.

I am not the biggest fashion guy in the world (I know what I like, thats it), but Bill Cunningham would tell me otherwise.  His whole view is that beauty is being different and know what you like.  Not what the designers shove down your throat.  Just be you!

This was not only an interesting fashion piece but a wonderful human piece as well.  There were also plenty of laughs.  I highly recommend checking it out even though its running its last shows at the film forum today.

Get it on your NetFlix queue.

Shows this past week...

Just saw QOTSA preform their self titled album from start to finish. The show was 4/1 at the Riv in Chicago. Great show but we got there late and missed "Regular John" and "Avon," which makes me ill to think about. After they played the album, they played a few favorites. Any way the show was great and I found this on YouTube. Thanks to Rickker for posting.

Also, check out Hopleaf for preRiv beers and eats. The beers and food were on point.

Check out the show schedule here. http://cmj09.sched.org/type/showcase#

I am speaking as a mentor on Thursday the 22nd, so come down to the panels on Thursday at 3 if you are interested in learning about online marketing.

Shows This Past Week

Datarock
Highline Ballroom
http://www.myspace.com/datarock

This was a really fun show as you would likely assume. A wonderful blend of cheesiness and dancing... and neither one of them stopped from the time it began until it ended. If you aren't aware their sounds a dance rock/electronic that takes a plenty of leads from the 80s including a shout out to Revenge of the Nerds in the song "Computer Camp Love." Solid references for a group of Scandinavian guys. The show included all dancing all the time including having members of the band doing the worm on stage, dancing among the crowd. It was lively and fun but I think it was mostly due to the small room. I don't know how it would have translated in a large room. The sounds aren't big enough as in a Justice or MSTRKRFT way. It was a lot of fun, if they are in a small venue in your town you may want to give'em a shot.

Non Music Related High Point

A show that has fun with itself is always fun. Its a treat when the bands (and fans!) don't take themselves too seriously... especially in New York.

The Lovely Feathers
Bowery Ballroom
http://www.myspace.com/thelovelyfeathers

I have seen this band a few times (including the opening for Metric the first time I saw them). When I walked into the Bowery Ballroom, my friends I was meeting were all sitting around one of the downstairs bar room tables with the band. They are here promoting a new record called Fantasy of the Lot. These Montreal indie rockers have changed lineups a few times since I saw them the first time, but their front man remains the most important piece as well as the showman of the bunch. They band borrows guitar riffs from the Clash at times and has a keyboardist that is not afraid to ad some highly feminine vocals. He is good at it though. I didn't stick around for the bands after them but these guys were great. I would also say don't miss them when they come to your town.

Non Music Related High Point

As I mentioned before, my friends were sitting at a table with the band before the show. They asked them what songs they wanted to hear and were saying "yes" or "no" to each request. Then when they played the song that everyone agreed on, he actually said "this is for my boys from Hoboken." I see hundreds of bands year, not once have I gotten a request to their friend in the East Village.

Good Read From Lefsetz

If you actually read this you likely get these letters anyway, but I thought I would share it nonetheless.

-------
It could be in a polo field, like Coachella.

Or in one city, a three day event, like Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Or even a month long event in a metropolis that wanted to drive tourist business.

The rage in concerts these days is the performance of complete albums. Bruce Springsteen is even going to do "Born To Run" in Nashville. Why don't we have a festival where every act performs a complete album?

It could only be classic acts, the ones who most embody the album concept. Or, it could be everyone from old to new, inspiring young acts to record full opuses, and the audience to listen to them.

The live business is hurting. The old acts have burned out their audiences, delivering the same music at high prices. Thus, the album performance concept. A way to get people to pay one more time. And they do. And will. They want to relive that great record, the one they played every day in high school, or college.

So maybe it's in Vegas, especially if it's old acts. Because oldsters don't want to camp. Headliners are stars like Paul McCartney, doing "Band On The Run", or the aforementioned Boss doing "The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle". To add a dimension of hipness, get Lou Reed to do "Loaded". Yes, it's great to have the original band, but in many cases they're not alive, or speaking to each other, so if you get the key player/singer, that will suffice.

Roger Waters toured "Dark Side Of The Moon". He can do that, or "The Wall".

All those acts past sixty, who are playing to ever-dwindling crowds... Loggins & Messina can do "Sittin' In", their exquisite debut. The Youngbloods can even do "Elephant Mountain".

And Roxy Music can do "Avalon". And Pearl Jam can do "Ten". And Air can do "Moon Safari". And, as a closer, an unannounced jam, everybody can hit the stage and do "Sgt. Pepper".

Of course Phish gets a slot, if we're skewing younger or broader, they've covered everything from "Quadrophenia" to the White Album. And Dave Grohl can merge the Foo Fighters and Krist Novoselic, to do "Nevermind", or "In Utero".

Imagine the press. Imagine the excitement. This is truly a one time only event. Sure, maybe these acts will ultimately tour these albums, but you won't be able to see them all at one time.

Furthermore, there will be Internet voting, where fans will demand their favorite albums. The promoter will start with the top, trying to get a group to perform (or even reform!) the album!

Sure, tickets will be expensive. Which is why maybe it's a festival at multiple venues, each with its own entrance fee, over a series of nights in one city. Each gig being self-sustaining. But why not utilize the modern festival concept? One sum buys you everything. And, like modern festivals, you can't see everything. Do you catch the number one album on the main stage, or 10cc doing their debut in the tent?

Next year, completely different albums. So, if you miss this one...

The acts are ready, the audience is eager. We're in a lull, waiting for the next big thing. Let's celebrate our past, what we all love, before the moment evaporates.

Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins to Star in Vampire Flick (The Tripwire)

From The Tripwire.
This seems a little more appealing to me than Twilight ever has.
------

I’m trying to remember another pop culture trend as weirdly “everywhere” as the new collective fascination with vampires has become. It’s Monday, I’m failing. There are Vampire Diaries billboards all over Manhattan right about now, True Blood seems to be killing it and with the news that Bon Iver and Thom Yorke will be lending their voices to the upcoming Twilight sequel’s soundtrack not quite in the rearview mirror, it’s becoming more and more clear that these bigger than the tween-0-sphere. On the heels of that Iver/Yorke/indie rock mindbomb comes news that Henry Rollins, Moby and Iggy Pop will be starring a Suck, a “vampire spoof about “rock ’n’ roll wannabes in search of immortality and a record deal.” In the film, a mullet-fortified Rollins fronts the Winners, a nascent band in the crosshairs of legendary vampire hunter Eddie Van Helsing, played by Malcolm McDowell. There will be twists and turns and liters of blood spillt and industry barbs and probably an overwhelming dose of sexual metaphors. Check the trailer above for a taste. Shows This Past Month/Good Music Videos

The Dead Weather
Terminal 5

The talent in this band is immeasurable. Jack White on drums. Jack Lawrence on bass. Dean Fertita on guitar. Alison Mosshart on vocals. Amazing.

The record is very good, one of the stronger records of the year, but the live show was way better. Mosshart turned out to be one of the best live performers I have ever seen. My favorite song on the record "Will There Be Enough Water?" also turned out the be the best song at the show. Occasionally White would walk around on the stage and the room would go crazy, especially when he picked up a guitar and sang a quick song with Fertita on organs. This is a must see band that hopefully is not just a one off.

Non Music Related High Point

I went alone and happened to run into an old family friend from when I was a young kid. It was nice being in a room as big as Terminal 5 and not having to stand alone.

Also, they don't have much of a MySpace page so here is their new video... its pretty nuts.

A New Supergroup

Upon hearing about this one, my response was simply... "um, holy shit."

Rumors have been floating around the internets for a while now about a collaboration between Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. Now, a confirmation of sorts has come in the form of a last-minute announcement of a Lollapalooza aftershow to be held August 9th at the Metro, with the three bands’ logos on the flier. Apparently the three musicians call themselves Them Crooked Vultures, and have been working on a studio album for three years. So far nothing has been officially confirmed, but the cryptic post isn’t too hard to decode. (via Consequence of Sound)

Lollapalooza 2009 Guide

Hello All,

Here is this years guide. Reminder, the Beastie Boys are no longer playing. MCA of the group has be diagnosed with cancer and all of their shows have been cancelled. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are taking their place. They are a solid group with some solid sounds. If you have questions about them email me and I will fill you in.

As always I want to remind you the rules of the study guides:

• On the Guides. I only write about bands I know about… I don’t do much extra research so if I skip someone, please look into it or ask me and I will see what I can dig up after the fact.
• I don’t write about the big acts that everyone knows. I don’t have to write about them because you know! This year that group only includes Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon and the Killers (out of spite for this one). I will however include Depeche Mode, Tool and Jane’s Addiction. Again, if you have questions about bands not included ask and I can whip something up for you later.
• There will be conflicts on the study guides. Every year we run into times when there are two great bands going at the same time… that sucks, but I do include info on both. For example so far, White Lies are on at the same time as Amazing Baby.
• In the section with the downloads the * denotes that song is either their most popular, most recognizable or the best example of what this bands music sounds like.
• As always, if you don’t feel like printing these or opening them you can find them at http://rebelderadio.blogspot.com
• Of course, feel free to share these with whoever.

If you find typos, I don’t give a shit because these took me hours to do.

Looking forward to a great weekend!

Bluesy, garage band… with very unique deep female vocals. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are regulars on WXRT if not yet, soon enough. Occasionally the guitars sound Pixie or Sonic Youth-esque.

White boy hip hop more in the old school Beastie Boys in that the songs are about drinking, partying and sex. The actual flow of the songs sounds more Eminem-ish though than it does old Beastie Boys. Not to mention as a man of 28, he makes me long for my college years.

The lead singer Colin Meloy has become somewhat of an indie icon. They can also fit into the baroque folk pop genre.

This guys plays a ton of instruments… a ton. He spends most of his time behind a guitar since he is only one man, but his proficiency in many instruments has created some wonderfully thick yet simple songs. There is no telling how many people will be on stage with him. Will he have an orchestra? Will he be alone? Could go either way.

These guys are legends in their own right. They helped create the new wave goth sound that bands like Joy Division brought to the forefront in the late 70s. Their success has been huge over the years (they have been around since 1977) and their influence is as big today as ever (White Lies, The Killers, Bravery, etc.). I have only seen these guys once. It was a couple years ago opening for Cold War Kids. They have an interesting sound that incorporates soul and rock in more of a Cold War Kids way than a Black Crowes way. They use a ton of instruments and non instruments (in a trash lid or glass bottle sort of way). This is for fans of Cold War Kids, Clap Your Hands A Say Yeah and Dr. Dog.

This was a band that I was unfamiliar with until Lollapalooza 2006. My brother wanted to see them and frankly I was pleasantly surprised. They are a good combination of indie and classic rock. Their shows are good and energetic but occasionally turn into Democratic Conventions/anti war rallies and it get in the way of the music occasionally.

This maybe the happiest and most upbeat act at Lollapalooza this year. The songs are all fun. They don’t take themselves overly serious, its all fun. Think, if Sufjan Stevens and the people from the old “I’d Like To Buy The World A Coke” commercials decided to make a dance punk group.

I was introduced to these guys by one of my Seattle based street teamers. Ok, so maybe they aren’t as minimalist as some of the Monterey Pop era folk musicians were musically, but these guys did played the greenest and cheapest tour I have ever heard of. The two lead guys hoped on their bicycles that were attached to trailers and they biked around the northwest to do their first tour. Times have changed and I am sure they have a more expensive less eco friendly ride now.

SANTIGOLD

Let me start by saying here real name is Santi White, and that’s how I usually know her. This woman is a jack of all trades. The first time I heard her name I was a freshman in college reading the booklet that came with the CD Beneath The Surface by GZA (Wu Tang). She cowrote the title track (I remember that because it was my favorite song on the album). I heard her name again in 2005 when I got into Philly post punk band Supergrub featuring Ben Kenney (bassist for Incubus) on vocals and guitar. She did songs with them too. I then found out that she was an A&R rep at Epic Records, see told you. Her music sounds like a MIA, part dance, part new wave, part island flavors. L.E.S. Artistes is one of my favorite songs of last year, but it was Lights Out that you may remember from a commercial but I don’t remember what it was for.

These guys at time sound like the greats of the 70s Manchester punk scene, who the most noticeable is Buzzcocks. Their songs are very fun and the subject mater is exactly what you expect from a group of guys writing as teens/early twenties. The songs tend to be high energy and about girls and drinking. Their debut record was the highest selling debut album in the history of the UK and it still is nine years later.

They had the best song in 2006. Its funny, I am not totally familiar with all of their music, but I have seen them a few times and their live show is great. Its hard to put a genre on these guys since they use rock instruments but don’t create the melodies you hear in a normal rock song. Its rock, dance music and maybe a little hip hop all in one. This band is strongly recommended even just for a couple songs to see. They are also known for doing really cool covers in their sets.

These guys aren’t your normal hardcore punk band. For one they use a ton of melody. The singer is somewhat of intellectual. So take those two things and add it to the fact that one of their first big songs was a slow acoustic song about love. Most of their songs are on the harder side and most of their songs have to do with fighting oppression and violence.

These guys have been called everything from noise pop, freak folk or just plain indie rock. I have actually never seen these guys live, but their music has been super popular on the indie rock stations online and on the satellites. Think of electronic music made more for the chillout tent than for the rave warehouse. I am not quite sure how this is going to translate in such and open field. I also don’t understand how this is going to translate to the people waiting for Tool to go on.

This is an indie pop band. The thing that gives them the dreamy sound is you take his semi Stingesque vocals and add them to a girl who sings background vocals and plays a cello and a girl on a violin. Don’t let the headline in this band confuse you. They are a solid band that unfortunately for them may have peaked with their first record. This is a like a more serious version of Louis XIV. I have never seen him live and frankly don’t know a single song buy him but I saw the YouTube video of him on some early morning tv show and it was just weird. If you know me, you know that I am a huge fan. From his beginnings in Velvet Underground until now there have been few songs I haven’t been into. He is one of the most influential musicians of the past 50 years. The first Velvet Underground record only sold a couple thousand copies, but it resulted in the formation of several thousand bands. His brand of glam rock resulted in what is now considered punk music. His music ranges to being songs of love lost, to drugs, murder and sex in Alphabet City. This electronic duo (similar to Justice) is part DJ part live electronic music. They have made two records. The Looks from 2006 was great, Fist of God from this year is very mediocre. The big song on it being “Bounce” with N.O.R.E. It sounds more like a bad radio hip hop song than it does a dance song. They are more known for the remixes of for indie, pop and electronic groups such as Death From Above 1979 (one of the members of DFA 79 is now in MSTRKRFT) Metric, Wolfmother, Juliette and the Licks (Juliette Lewis’s band), Bloc pary, Brazilian Girls, Justice, The Kills John Legend and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their first full length record Carnavas was one of my favorite records of 2006. Swoon is on of my favorite records of 2009. Think Gish era Smashing Pumpkins.
