CMJ Music Marathon
CMJ is this week in New York City. I love it/I hate it. Its fun to go to shows, its fun to see some friends from out of town but its exhausting.

This was a really fun show as you would likely assume. A wonderful blend of cheesiness and dancing... and neither one of 
them stopped from the time it began until it ended. If you aren't aware their sounds a dance rock/electronic that takes a plenty of leads from the 80s including a shout out to Revenge of the Nerds in the song "Computer Camp Love." Solid references for a group of Scandinavian guys. The show included all dancing all the time including having members of the band doing the worm on stage, dancing among the crowd. It was lively and fun but I think it was mostly due to the small room. I don't know how it would have translated in a large room. The sounds aren't big enough as in a Justice or MSTRKRFT way. It was a lot of fun, if they are in a small venue in your town you may want to give'em a shot.

A show that has fun with itself is always fun. Its a treat when the bands (and fans!) don't take themselves too seriously... especially in New York.

I have seen this band a few times (including the opening for Metric the first time I saw them). When I walked into the Bowery Ballroom, my friends I was meeting were all sitting around one of the downstairs bar room tables with the band. They are here 
promoting a new record called Fantasy of the Lot. These Montreal indie rockers have changed lineups a few times since I saw them the first time, but their front man remains the most important piece as well as the showman of the bunch. They band borrows guitar riffs from the Clash at times and has a keyboardist that is not afraid to ad some highly feminine vocals. He is good at it though. I didn't stick around for the bands after them but these guys were great. I would also say don't miss them when they come to your town.

As I mentioned before, my friends were sitting at a table with the band before the show. They asked them what songs they wanted to hear and were saying "yes" or "no" to each request. Then when they played the song that everyone agreed on, he actually said "this is for my boys from Hoboken." I see hundreds of bands year, not once have I gotten a request to their friend in the East Village.

Good Read From Lefsetz
If you actually read this you likely get these letters anyway, but I thought I would share it nonetheless.

It could be in a polo field, like Coachella.
Or in one city, a three day event, like Lollapalooza in Chicago.
Or even a month long event in a metropolis that wanted to drive tourist business.
The rage in concerts these days is the performance of complete albums. Bruce Springsteen is even going to do "Born To Run" in Nashville. Why don't we have a festival where every act performs a complete album?
It could only be classic acts, the ones who most embody the album concept. Or, it could be everyone from old to new, inspiring young acts to record full opuses, and the audience to listen to them.
The live business is hurting. The old acts have burned out their audiences, delivering the same music at high prices. Thus, the album performance concept. A way to get people to pay one more time. And they do. And will. They want to relive that great record, the one they played every day in high school, or college.
So maybe it's in Vegas, especially if it's old acts. Because oldsters don't want to camp. Headliners are stars like Paul McCartney, doing "Band On The Run", or the aforementioned Boss doing "The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle". To add a dimension of hipness, get Lou Reed to do "Loaded". Yes, it's great to have the original band, but in many cases they're not alive, or speaking to each other, so if you get the key player/singer, that will suffice.
Roger Waters toured "Dark Side Of The Moon". He can do that, or "The Wall".
All those acts past sixty, who are playing to ever-dwindling crowds... Loggins & Messina can do "Sittin' In", their exquisite debut. The Youngbloods can even do "Elephant Mountain".
And Roxy Music can do "Avalon". And Pearl Jam can do "Ten". And Air can do "Moon Safari". And, as a closer, an unannounced jam, everybody can hit the stage and do "Sgt. Pepper".
Of course Phish gets a slot, if we're skewing younger or broader, they've covered everything from "Quadrophenia" to the White Album. And Dave Grohl can merge the Foo Fighters and Krist Novoselic, to do "Nevermind", or "In Utero".
Imagine the press. Imagine the excitement. This is truly a one time only event. Sure, maybe these acts will ultimately tour these albums, but you won't be able to see them all at one time.
Furthermore, there will be Internet voting, where fans will demand their favorite albums. The promoter will start with the top, trying to get a group to perform (or even reform!) the album!
Sure, tickets will be expensive. Which is why maybe it's a festival at multiple venues, each with its own entrance fee, over a series of nights in one city. Each gig being self-sustaining. But why not utilize the modern festival concept? One sum buys you everything. And, like modern festivals, you can't see everything. Do you catch the number one album on the main stage, or 10cc doing their debut in the tent?
Next year, completely different albums. So, if you miss this one...
The acts are ready, the audience is eager. We're in a lull, waiting for the next big thing. Let's celebrate our past, what we all love, before the moment evaporates.

Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins to Star in Vampire Flick (The Tripwire)

I’m trying to remember another pop culture trend as weirdly “everywhere” as the new collective fascination with vampires has become. It’s Monday, I’m failing. There are Vampire Diaries billboards all over Manhattan right about now, True Blood seems to be killing it and with the news that Bon Iver and Thom Yorke will be lending their voices to the upcoming Twilight sequel’s soundtrack not quite in the rearview mirror, it’s becoming more and more clear that these bigger than the tween-0-sphere. On the heels of that Iver/Yorke/indie rock mindbomb comes news that Henry Rollins, Moby and Iggy Pop will be starring a Suck, a “vampire spoof about “rock ’n’ roll wannabes in search of immortality and a record deal.” In the film, a mullet-fortified Rollins fronts the Winners, a nascent band in the crosshairs of legendary vampire hunter Eddie Van Helsing, played by Malcolm McDowell. There will be twists and turns and liters of blood spillt and industry barbs and probably an overwhelming dose of sexual metaphors. Check the trailer above for a taste. The talent in this band is immeasurable. Jack White on drums. Jack Lawrence on bass. Dean Fertita on guitar. Alison Mosshart on vocals. Amazing.
The record is very good, one of the stronger records of 
the year, but the live show was way better. Mosshart turned out to be one of the best live performers I have ever seen. My favorite song on the record "Will There Be Enough Water?" also turned out the be the best song at the show. Occasionally White would walk around on the stage and the room would go crazy, especially when he picked up a guitar and sang a quick song with Fertita on organs. This is a must see band that hopefully is not just a one off.

I went alone and happened to run into an old family friend from when I was a young kid. It was nice being in a room as big as Terminal 5 and not having to stand alone.

A New Supergroup
Upon hearing about this one, my response was simply... "um, holy shit."
Rumors have been floating around the internets for a while now about a collaboration between Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. Now, a confirmation of sorts has come in the form of a last-minute announcement of a Lollapalooza aftershow to be held August 9th at the Metro, with the three bands’ logos on the flier. Apparently the three musicians call themselves Them Crooked Vultures, and have been working on a studio album for three years. So far nothing has been officially confirmed, but the cryptic post isn’t too hard to decode. (via Consequence of Sound)
